Wheat Environment

  • As a food crop, wheat ranks second to sorghum. Present annual consumption is around one million tons and estimated per capita consumption is 33 kg per annum.  During the sixties, wheat production was confined to Northern Sudan where an area of 30,000 feddans was cultivated. Wheat has expanded over years to other parts of the country and its area reached 800,000 feddans during the early nineties. Recent changes in agricultural polices have resulted in a sharp decline in the area under wheat, whereby in the year 2000 this area was in the vicinity of only 200,000 feddans.
  • Generally, productivity is low, estimated at 1.2 tons per feddan in the north and at only 0.7 tons in central Sudan. For comparison, average productivity in the Arab Republic of Egypt is 2.5 tons/feddan.
