Wheat Environment

There are five agro-ecological zones in Algeria:

  1. Sahel-type area along the Mediterranean coast
  2. Sub-littoral plains
  3. Interior plains
  4. High plateaus and the steppe region
  5. Sahara desert, with oases.

Wheat is grown principally in the first 3 zones and High plateaus.

Main production contraints:

Abiotic stresses:

    • Drough (drought recurrence; low and erratic rainfalls; scarcity and poor quality of underground water)
    • Heat and cold
    • Salinity

Biotic stresses (causing 30-80% of yield losses) includie stripe rust, leaf rust, septoria, tan spot, fusarium, take-all
