Wheat Environment

  • Wheat is the second most important grain crop produced in South Africa [WA00003]
  • RSA has the potential to produce most of its local wheat requirement, but it doesn't use this potential
  • Problem is more of economic and political character - in 1996 the single channel wheat marketing system was replaced with unprotected competition on the international market (supply and demand determine the price)
  • Industry initiated a levy per ton of wheat milled, which has been used to fund research
  • There are estimated 3800 to 4000 wheat producers in the South Africa.[WA00003]

Three distinct wheat production regions:

  1. Mediterranean climate, winter rain, spring dryland wheat (planting between mid-April and mid-June)
  2. Summer rain, winter / intermediate dryland wheat (planting between mid-May and end of July)
  3. Irrigated spring wheat (approximatelly 20% of the total wheat area)
